Salt Lake City Gay Pride

IMG_1785.jpg, originally uploaded by paleck.

For two years running my good friend Paleck has taken it on himself to be the unofficial photographer for Salt Lake City's Gay Pride parade. This year's photos are great, and give the viewer a good sense of how vital and vibrant the gay community is in SLC.

However, as one might expect, support for the queer community is not unanimous. Paleck's done a great job capturing an anti-gay protest.

It's a rich study in contrasts. I especially like the contrast between SLC's finest (a very professional looking bunch whom I'd want running interference for me) and the homophobes.

Be sure to look at the larger sizes.

Hi, Dennis. Yeah, I see what you mean about the contrast between SLC's finest and the homophobes. And then there's the observers in the foreground. Lots going on in that photo. But at least it "feels" calm, as if no violence is going to break out (or I'm probably only projecting calmness onto it, because there's probably a lot of tension in that photo).

(Remember? We met at PNWCA in Bellingham. We'll be working together next year! P.S. I love the graphics and colors of your blog. And that you bring a Buddhist perspective in.)

Laura,

Yes, of course I remember you.

Thanks for the comment. From what Paleck told me, there wasn't any tension beyond the fact that of the homophobes' disdain of the proceedings.

And there wasn't any violence that day.

Thanks,

Dennis
